Our Story

In 1935 Edward P. Mahar left the employ of his brother at a funeral home in Hoosick Falls, New York to open a new funeral home on Elm Street in Bennington, Vermont, beginning a family business that continues seventy years later. Together with his wife Olga they established the Edward P. Mahar Funeral Home and three years later moved to the present location at 628 Main Street in Bennington. In 1959 their son, Alexander E. Mahar, joined the family business and ten years later Alex and his wife Marilyn incorporated the business and changed the name to the E. P. Mahar & Son Funeral Home Inc. Over the years the business has become a mainstay of the Bennington business community, based on dedicated service to the many families they serve.

John Mahar, a third generation funeral director, joined the family business in 1988 and currently serves as vice-president of the corporation. In addition to his duties as a funeral director, and with help from his wife Trisha, John oversees operations for Mt. Anthony Cremation Service, J.A. Mahar Monuments and JAG Limousine Service.
